The attachment of a bare LED chip in direct contact with a substrate (such as silicon carbide or sapphire) to form LED arrays is known as Chip-on-Board, or "COB." COB LEDs have several advantages over prior LED technologies like Surface Mounted Device ("SMD") or Dual In-line Package ("DIP") LEDs.
