A modern core drill, like a hole saw, is a drill that is specifically designed to remove a cylinder of material. The core is the material that is left inside the drill bit. Metal core drills are known as annular cutters. Industrial diamond grit is commonly used as the abrasive material in core drills for concrete and hard rock, and they can be operated by electricity, pneumatics, or hydraulics. Water is routinely used to cool core drills, and the water also takes the fine waste away as a slurry. Carbide core drills can be used to drill masonry, however diamond is more effective when cutting through rebar.
