An electrical tool for measuring alternating current (AC) is called a current transformer (CT). For secure and precise measurement, it lowers large currents to a bearable level.
- The portion of the transformer carrying the highest current is called the primary winding. Usually, just one wire or conductor is seen going through the center of the transformer.
- Secondary Winding This winding is used for monitoring or measuring and carries a lesser, proportionate current. It is linked to safety relays or meters.
- Magnetic Core Constructed from silicon steel laminates, it offers the magnetic flux produced by the main current a low-reluctance path.
- Insulation Maintains safety and averts electrical problems by guaranteeing electrical isolation between the primary and secondary windings.
